All That Your Heart Can Take

On Friday, we got the results of my father's heart catheterization, which mostly confirmed what we already knew: there's a very bad blockage in there, a blockage has likely been there for awhile and likely caused his fall last summer and is definitely causing all of his current bouts of dizziness and breathlessness that have essentially kept him housebound for months now. Angioplasty or a stent or medication will not help. Bypass surgery is absolutely not an option because of his age and health and Quality of life, enjoy what you have, and all that.

On Saturday, my mom called 911 after the third nitroglycerin failed to halt my dad's symptoms and he was admitted to the hospital.

Today, they're meeting with the heart surgeon about the bypass surgery. My dad is resisting, and I can't blame him for that. For two years, they've told us the surgery could kill him. In two days, we've simply run out of other options.

I'm loading up babies and pets and an indefinite number of days' worth of underwear. I never really know what I actually can DO when I rush up to visit at the first sign of a crisis, but it's...well, rushing up to visit is just what I always do. So I do that. I'm doing that. Okay.

Sorry and worried on your behalf.
My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family, especially your Dad, of course.

Just being there will mean so much to him. I moved back to my hometown after eight years away just before my dad was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. That last year wasn't a lot of fun in a lot of ways, but I was so grateful to be able to be nearby and spend as much time as possible with him. Best wishes to you and your family.

Must be Motherhood

All the love of the internet is with you! xxxx

Thinking of you.

As someone who has done the "rush home for a crisis" before, I will say that you will never regret that decision. Every moment you spend with your parents is precious and the knowledge that you care enough to be there when they're hurting is invaluable to them. I am keeping your family in my prayers - I hope everything works out the way it is meant to.

I'm so sorry for what your family is going through. I'll be holding a good thought for you guys.

So Sorry. My 79 year old father has a similar history. We looked into EECP which is a non invasive series of procedures to increase circulation/decrease blockages. It has helped TREMENDOUSLY! Look into it.

Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family!

I'm so sorry.... Your family is in my thoughts.

Just so ya know - three years ago my grandfather has quadruple bypass at age 81. It was dicey for a while but he is the better for it now.

Nothing But Bonfires

Oh, Amy, I'm thinking of you. Lots and lots of good vibes sent your way to all of you.

Just remember that hand on your shoulder. It's still there, even if you can't feel it. He will come through this. Think positively, drive safely, and just love your family the best way you know how, even if it feels like you don't know what you're doing while in crisis-mode.

God bless you and your family - you're all in my prayers.

Drive safely, I'll pray for you and yours.

Most likely, Ezra and Noah can do much more than YOU can. Children are often the best medicine in times like this, and help keep spirits up when most everything else looks pretty gloomy. And, in coming through a major surgery like that successfully, the best thing to do is go into it with a positive attitude. Ez and Noah can help with that like no one else, I would suspect.

My dad was just diagnosed with cancer and he has had a bypass surgery years ago, surgery or chemo may not be an option for him either...just saying, I know where you are emotionally, it is not nice. I am waiting to hear about when I should pack up and go, probably today, prayers, good thoughts-drive safe...

I'm glad you are able to be there. Hope everything works out for the best and very positive thoughts going out for you all.

Amy M.

So sorry, Amy. You & your fam are in my prayers.

My dad had a brain aneurysm in '03 & I flew out to be with him & my Mom. I couldn't do anything, either, but was so happy I went. I got to be with him in his last moments on Earth & help my Mom through 1 of the roughest months of her life.

Be safe, and wishing everything works out for your family the way it's supposed to.

Thinking good thoughts for you and your family and keeping you all in my prayers.

Prayers for your dad and your family.

That is not good news, and I am sorry for you and your family. I hope you made it safely.

Praying for good decisions and even better outcomes.

Oh Amy... I hope your dad is ok. My thoughts are with you and your family.

I'll be thinking good thoughts for you.

Alicia Millis

oh sweetie, I am so sorry. I am sending loads of prayers your family's way.

My mother-in-law was in a similar position 8 years ago, complicated by some hormonal issues related to her thyroid and by a nasty virus that she caught because her system was so weakened. She could barely walk from one room to another. They operated in March of 2001, and she's going strong now: working, traveling, chasing after her grandkids, exercising, etc.

Remember that anything is possible, no matter how bad things seem. I hope all is well with you and your family.

Amy, praying for your dad and for you.

Oh man. I'm so sorry. I hope all turns out well. Trust me; your being there will mean so much to your mom.

Delurking to say that I'm sorry your family has to go through this - just know that lots of people on the internet are hoping for the best!

You are doing the right thing and are blessed to be able to do it. If your parents are anything like mine, being there for your Dad will help give your mom some support and peace, and being there for your mom will give your dad comfort and peace.Atleast that is how it worked on my family-parents are funny that way! Sending you lots of prayers for strength, grace and peace.

Lots of prayers for Papa Corbin.

That sucks. I'm sorry.

Horrible Warning

My husband had open heart surgery a year and a half age 37. I'm an expert in dealing with all things heart and surgery and hospitals and worry related. Please email me if you'd like. I'll email you my phone number if you'd like to talk. In this really does help to know someone who knows how much it sucks.

Praying for your father, you, and your whole family.

I'm so sorry. I'm not really a religious person, but may God keep a watchful eye and a protective hand over your Dad.
