The Ballad of Bloon & Bubby
A Cat & His Boy

One Month From Three

"Ike, do you want the rest of your milk?"

"NO."

"Really? No more milk?"

"NO. NO MILK. I DON'T WANT MILK EITHER."

*folds arms, stomps feet*

"Okay then."

*puts milk away*

"NOOOO DON'T TAKE MY MILK."

*hysterical crying*

***

"Ike, do you want your toy back?"

"NO."

"Are you sure? Because once I start driving I can't give you the toy back."

"NO. NO TOY. I DON'T WANT TOY EITHER."

*folds arms, sticks out lower lip*

"Okay then."

*puts toy on passenger seat, starts driving*

"NOOOOO GIVE MY TOY BACK."

*woeful weeping*

***

"Ike, do you want pizza for lunch?"

"NO. NO PIZZA EITHER."

"Grilled cheese?"

"YES! GILLED CHEE GILLED CHEE! YES!"

"Ah-ha! So you can still say that word!"

*makes him a grilled cheese, hands him a grilled cheese*

"WHERE MY PIZZA?"

*despondent sobbing*

***

In the morning:

"NO UNNERWEAR EITHER. I BABY IKE I WEAR DIAPER."

At naptime & bedtime:

"NO DIAPER EITHER. I BIG IKE I WEAR UNNERWEAR."

All the damn time:

*frenzied shrieking because it's wrong. whatever it is, it's WRONG WRONG WRONG*

***

Whenever I walk into a room, or pick him up from school, or sit down on the couch, or try to work in my office, or make dinner, or go to the bathroom, or basically attempt to exist on his plane of reality:

"MOM MOM MOM I NEEDA HUG MOM MOM MOM MOM MOM MOM MOM HUG HUG HUG TAKE ME TAKE ME HUG!"

*gives him a hug*

*gets greatest full-tilt-boogie hug in the world in return, all arms and legs and desperate squeezes*

"AW. I YOUR BABY IKE. I LIKE ME."

"I like you too, Baby Ike."

Ike almost 3

My just turned three is so doing all of this. it's awesome and frustrating all at the same time!

Stephanie

My just turned 2 year old does all these things. I want my Anna doll, no I don't want my Anna doll (puts Anna doll outside of crib), crazy crying ensues. Please don't tell me this lasts until she's 3?

Jean

The hugs totally make up for any tantrum. Hope your boys are like mine...age 10, almost 5 feed tall, still wants to curl up in my lap sometimes. There is still room.

Candace

I remember those days - four is different, but equally interesting. The only thing that really changes is the complexity of what's wanted and not right. :/

souphead

he is your baby Ike. forever and ever.
the woe of the almost 3 year old is intense!

Oh, my, goodness, it is seriously odd to hear my child described by you. My Wyatt is almost 2.5, and the words are the SAME, except he says ANYWHERE instead of EITHER. So. Frustrating. And yet, the HUGS. YUM.

Baby Ike Insanity Conversations™ are some of my FAVORITE!

(I'm hoping my hunch is right, and there's a Noah-themed post next!)

I just...man. Three. I feel like I've been way higher than I've been for him to be almost three.

Kelly

Oh that is a day in the life of my little girl. I can't believe that she is 3 this week. But oh so much ATTITUDE.

Angie

Why can't you do anything right, Mom? Woe is Ike. :)

As a Nanny, I found age 3 much more challenging than the twos. (the 'terrible twos' were just a preview for my little guy).
Enjoy the snuggles!

DontBlameTheKids

My 18 month old is like this. So...only 1.5 years away from the end of the terrible twos? Which are nothing, NOTHING compared to the life-sucking horror of three. (For Lily, anyway. Maybe Evie will be different?)

Jenn

That hair! Love.

Maggie

My kids are past this stage but I have a 2.5 year old nephew and a newborn niece. This reminds me of my nephew who always wants whatever someone has. I walked into a room carrying his sister and he goes, "Hey, that's my baby sister!" and he threw himself on the floor wailing. It cracked me up so hard!

AmandaPolson

He is the cutest. And those hugs totally make it all worthwhile, but gah. The mind-changing indecision power trip! My nearly 2 yo is doing the same thing and its driving me crazy!

Mel

I so, SO remember when my daughter was this adorable, exasperating age. Can't wait for the next one to hit it, too.

Says it all.

Deanna

I like Baby Ike's "Yo Gabba Gabba" shirt!

Bertine

Been reading your posts for a while and wanted to delurk to tell you that I really, really love you! (Or your blog, rather) And I can relate to little Ike, for woe is me, I have twin girls born exactly 27 days after Ike, and they are the light and love of my life, except when they are not!

Betsy

Love the (seemingly random)use of the word "either!"

Karen

Oh, yeah. I just laugh when mine (2 months over 3) does that. Thankfully, it is lessening and I will usually do/give the other option as well. Mostly because "ain't nobody got no time for that" and it does seem to give him a bit of control - which is all he really wants.

LD's Mom

Precious post!

Kim CS

Oh god us too. I got the wrong cupcake shirt out this morning. Then she crawled in bed and told me she loved me sooooo much you're my best friend Mommy.

JulesInNC

OOF. I think we're all about ready to sell my 2 1/2 year-old to the gypsies right now. The attitude. The meltdowns. The DRAMA!!! But then she insists on hugs and "tisses," and all is (briefly) right with the world.

Sarah

Wow. That is my son (just turned two) exactly right now.
